Christmas gifts 2026: top 10 ideas made in Europe
10 Christmas gift ideas made in Europe, by houses that have been knitting or weaving for decades: something to give that lasts, with a story.

A gift made in Europe is a piece whose workshop you know, made to last several winters. Here is our selection of 10 ideas, from century-old houses to young brands. A note: Folkovar is on the list, since we are the ones writing it.

- Devold
1. A traditional-pattern balaclava, Folkovar
Each of our 4 balaclavas carries a European tradition knitted into the fabric: the Norwegian Selbu rose, Nordic helmet lines, Aran cables or the Highland tartan. In 100% Portuguese cotton, knitted in the Ave valley, machine-washable. €59 in pre-order, free shipping in France, dispatched from 1 December 2026, in time for the tree.

2. A Norwegian sweater, Dale of Norway
From its factory at Dale, about 50 kilometres from Bergen, Dale of Norway knits pure wool sweaters with Norwegian patterns. Since 1956 the house has also designed the official sweaters of the Norwegian national alpine ski team for the Olympics and world championships.

3. A Breton top, Saint James or Le Minor
Since 1889, near Mont-Saint-Michel in Normandy, Saint James has knitted tight-stitched virgin-wool sailor sweaters and cotton Breton tops. Le Minor, born in 1936 in Pont-l'Abbé around Breton embroidery, develops and makes all its pieces in its workshop in Guidel, Brittany.
4. A hand-knitted Icelandic sweater
The lopapeysa, the Icelandic sweater with a round yoke, can be bought hand-knitted from the Handknitting Association of Iceland, founded in 1977 by women who sold their sweaters to supplement the family income. It is today the reference for the handmade lopapeysa.
5. A cashmere scarf, Johnstons of Elgin
Founded in 1797 on the banks of the Lossie in Scotland, Johnstons of Elgin weaves cashmere and tweed at its Elgin mill and knits in Hawick. It is the only weaving mill in Scotland still doing everything on site, from fibre to finished cloth.

6. A Harris Tweed piece
Harris Tweed is protected by a 1993 Act of the UK Parliament: it must be handwoven by the islanders of Lewis, Harris, Uist and Barra in their homes, from pure virgin wool dyed and spun in the Outer Hebrides. The Harris Tweed Authority's Orb on the label guarantees it. Jacket, cap or bag: many brands use it.

7. Austrian loden, Steiner1888
Steiner1888 has made loden since 1888 in Mandling, at the foot of the Dachstein, in Austria. The original Schladming loden still comes out of a historic fulling mill there, and the house turns it into clothing, blankets and accessories.

8. Portuguese burel, Burel Factory
In Manteigas, in the Serra da Estrela, Burel Factory revived in 2010 a mill founded in 1947. Burel is a thick, dense wool once worn by shepherds for its warmth and resistance to rain.

9. An Aran sweater, Inis Meáin
Founded in 1976 on the island of Inis Meáin, in the Aran Islands, the house knits luxury knitwear inspired by the island, sold from New York to Tokyo. A second generation has run it since 2022.
Devold10. Wool base layers, Devold
Devold has dressed Norwegian fishermen since 1853, when Ole Andreas Devold brought a knitting machine back from Germany to Ålesund. Its wool base layers are made in its own factory, in Lithuania.
Which one to choose?
For a gift that stands out at under €60, a Folkovar balaclava has the edge on price and pattern. For a bigger budget, the Norwegian or Aran sweater remain classics. Either way, check the label: it is what tells you where the piece was made.
